Kerala reported its first swine flu death

A 33-year-old person died of Influenza A(H1N1) at a private hospital last week, taking the swine flu toll to 11 across the country.

The victim was identified as Wilson who returned to his home city last week from Andaman Nicobar Islands via Chennai.

The patient was in the advance stages of the disease when he was admitted to the hospital, State Health Minister P K Sreemathy said here.

State Health Services Director K Sailaja said that nearly 40 persons, including doctors and other staff of the private hospital, had been kept under observation following the death.

In view of the threat posed by the spread of H1N1 influenza, Kerala stepped up vigil and decided to set up testing centres in all districts. The Health Minister held video conferencing with district collectors and medical officers to chalk out preventive measures.

A total of 55 confirmed swine flu cases have been reported in the state.
