Left govt blindly protesting ASEAN treaty: Cong

Stating that it was unfortunate on the part of the CPI (M)-led Left government in Kerala taking out an adverse stand against ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, the Congress in Kerala on Thursday said the treaty was needed for the good of the nation.

The state government had been blindly protesting against ASEAN Free Trade Pact, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President Ramesh Chennithala said at a seminar in Thiruvananthapuram. He said there was no need for the centre to seek the opinion of the states while engaging in international treaties.

Meanwhile Opposition Leader in the Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy alleged that the CPI-M was protesting against the treaty to protect the interest of China as the flow of Chinese products to India would be is blocked though ASEAN nations.
